Running lava is an urban public space and installation project aimed at activating a new commercial and residential pedestrian street. It is located in Ningbo, the second most populous port city in Zhejiang Province, China.

One of the most distinctive highlights of the project is the large staircase connecting the open second floor space of the commercial street as a pedestrian passage.

In order to activate this pedestrian intersection and upgrade it into a multi-functional and eye-catching public space, the designer has determined the strategy of extending, separating and making full use of stairs from the ground as a key design intervention means to create a line of sight attraction and lead the conceptual context of the project as a finishing touch

Therefore, the simple staircase leading to the second floor has been transformed into a "Volcano" integrating various public activities. The designer has designed several open-air theaters at different heights to provide a platform for leisure and rest; A sunshade structure simulating the violent volcanic eruption process is designed to provide shade for the new rest area; A slide was even designed to simulate the flow of lava down the hillside during volcanic eruption.

The rest of the space continues to narrate the concept of lava. The erupting magma flattens the ground and replaces it with bright mottled colors and recreational functions suitable for children and adults, forming a very eye-catching multi-functional square at the pedestrian intersection. The flow of magma creates a stimulating and vivid multi-functional spatial dynamic line.

Magma square is designed with several seats and rest areas under the shade canopy, as well as mahjong and tic tac toe tables and adult rest areas. In terms of children's fun and play functions, we have equipped this space with swing sheds, seesaws, slides, hills and ramps, tunnels, sandbags and challenging obstacles along the track.

In general, the proposal creates a shining public space and creates urban punch points and entertainment hotspots in new commercial and residential development projects.
