The landscape design of Zhengdong MixC centers around the themes of “modern art, natural ecology, and urban vitality.” It thoroughly explores Zhengzhou’s regional culture, integrating the natural power of the Yellow River with the cultural essence of the Central Plains. These elements are translated into contemporary landscape language and applied to circulation organization, spatial forms, paving textures, and more. The design aims to create a high-quality, place-specific urban-level public space that embodies both the majestic grandeur of the Mother River and the pioneering spirit of the Central Plains.

Zhengdong MixC is located in the core zone of Zhengdong New District, situated at the area’s premier crossroads—the intersection of Jinshui East Road and Dongfeng South Road. With Line 1 of the metro running through the site, it enjoys a strategic geographical position and seamless multi-directional transport connectivity. As a pivotal node in Zhengdong New District, it serves as a crucial urban hub radiating influence across the broader region.

The landscape design draws inspiration from the Yellow River imagery, interpreting its dynamic sandbanks and undulating waves through contemporary design language. These natural elements are artfully transformed into a distinctive commercial landscape space that invites visitors to explore, appreciate, and immerse—creating a multi-sensory experience.

The project is divided into northern and southern zones, encompassing multiple functional modules—including a flagship MALL, office spaces, residential units, and municipally designated green areas. As a transit-oriented development (TOD) built above the subway, it boasts unparalleled transport accessibility and abundant landscape resources.

The Northern Zone, as the core landscape module, seamlessly integrates the MALL with a landscape park, creating an urban-scale public space that blends fashionable retail with leisurely comfort. It is poised to become a new civic hub for future gatherings, events, and social interactions.

Overview of the North plaza

The main entrance plaza is thoughtfully designed with spacious yet efficient circulation, ensuring smooth pedestrian flow during peak hours. One side features a public gathering area to enhance spatial functionality, while large-scale water feature walls flanking the entrance create a grand gateway effect, visually anchoring the main structure. The entire space draws inspiration from the dynamic flow of the Yellow River, with spatial scales rhythmically expanding and contracting like converging and dispersing currents. This hydrological concept extends to the paving design, where the river’s natural patterns are transformed into an elegantly modern visual rhythm.

Drawing inspiration from Yellow River culture with the theme “Ode to the Yellow River”, the design features a monumental 90+ meter interactive water feature – incorporating a synchronized musical fountain matrix, shimmering arched water columns, and dramatic artificial wave effects complemented by multi-media interactive displays. This iconic installation not only enhances site identity but also establishes a signature urban landmark exclusive to Zhengdong MixC.

A grand tree-lined boulevard stitches together the northern and southern districts, featuring stately Natalie oaks with robust silhouettes and full canopies. Complemented by an array of signature landscape lighting, it forms a powerful visual corridor that both guides and connects. The design intentionally preserves generous scale to accommodate future shaded pop-up markets as part of commercial programming strategies. This north-south arboreal axis naturally divides the space: to one side lies the leisurely “Streamside Grove” with meandering pathways, while the other transitions into the more formal “Corporate Park” serving hotel and office precincts. This deliberate spatial choreography creates dynamic yet balanced experiential layers—alternating between vitality and tranquility with artful rhythm.

The “Stellar Promenade” themed grove unfolds as an emerald galaxy ribbon, where a meandering water belt connects interactive features: a splash playground, an open-air woodland theater, a pet-friendly lawn, and stargazing terraces. This luminous green corridor transforms into a vibrant social hub, blending ecological poetry with urban vitality to create an insta-famous destination.

The forecourt park extends the overall design language through sweeping arcs that strategically partition spaces. The hotel precinct features dense groves of clustered Acer truncatum, creating a secluded ambiance that ensures privacy. In contrast, the office forecourt adopts an open layout, where sculptural Monstera deliciosa plantings interplay with modern feature walls to craft a clean, contemporary corporate identity.

The sunken plaza’s sculptural façade is collaboratively designed with the curtain wall system, achieving organic integration through unified geometric lines. The stepped terraces incorporate hydraulic jump jets that sparkle with water play, seamlessly blending with lush perennial borders to create an effortlessly natural oasis brimming with playful spontaneity.

The Southern District centers around a 900㎡ open undulating lawn, where clustered Acer truncatum groves frame both ends to create layered spatial depth. This versatile greenspace is strategically designed to accommodate future pop-up commercial events, while integrated pet amenities reinforce the development’s pet-friendly ethos. Surrounding stepped seating terraces seamlessly blend the commercial precinct with the urban green network, fostering dynamic city-park synergies.

Leveraging the sunken plaza’s commercial offerings and its “Daytime Café, Evening Bar” lifestyle concept, the Southern District amplifies its urban chic identity to cultivate a slow-living oasis brimming with authentic vitality and laid-back charm. The space employs graduated paving modules that transition seamlessly from perimeter seating zones toward the central plaza, creating visual depth through layered materiality. Unified alfresco furnishings with coordinated styling are complemented by strategically clustered planter systems—their organic arrangement striking the perfect balance between refinement and spontaneity to complete the plaza’s signature ambiance.
