Located within an industrial park in Chang’an District, Xi’an, ‘Zhoumo Isle’ integrates workspace, leisure, and living functions for its proprietors. The holistic design was executed by Shanghai Evolution Era Design Studio. The nomenclature ‘Zhoumo Isle’ derives from the given names of the owner-couple (Zhou & Mo), symbolizing the confluence of their professional endeavors and spiritual realms. The term ‘Isle’ metaphorizes a sanctuary of tranquility and an ideal habitat amidst urban tumult—embodying the owners’ aspirational spatial narrative.
Entrance corridor

Interior space analysis

Spanning approximately 500 sqm, the site exploits its vertical clearance advantage. The original concrete beams and columns form an unadorned, robust industrial framework—echoing the innate architectural texture of the ‘Isle.’ Without altering the existing structure, we orchestrate a spatially multidimensional narrative through chromatic interventions and landscape elements, interconnected via an Oriental garden-inspired promenade path.

Functional Zoning & Circulation
Upon entering, a narrow corridor framed by stainless-steel panels deliberately guides visitors along a circuitous path. Apertures punctuating one side of the passage interact with volumetric masses on the floor to carve out a defined precinct. Articulated steel-framed luminaires extend and fold through the space—transitioning from exterior to interior—crafting an allegory of ‘winding paths leading to secluded serenity’ within compact dimensions.

Transitioning through the corridor unveils an expansive volume. Two large-scale, square-section concrete columns dominate the central space, organically dividing the open area into dual precincts. Responding to the project’s dual programmatic nature (workplace and residential), we reconfigured this void into garden-esque itineraries: the reception zone and dining area flank opposing sides. Their autonomy is accentuated through raised platforms, varied floor finishes, and exposed overhead beams.

Analysis of Indoor courtyards

Between the twin square columns at the spatial nexus, the designer carved out an interior courtyard. Moss-veined flora and rugged boulders coalesce into a central landscape precinct, embodying the insular entity’s ethos: coexistence of autonomy and poetic resonance.

Central “Island”

Reception area analysis

Centered on the courtyard’s axial presence, functional programming responds to occupant scenarios by transposing the classical lexicon of gallery, pavilion, platform, and pergola — crystallizing an oriental garden promenade. The spatial framework concurrently solidifies: flanking the dining area stand discrete sleeping quarters and a principal studio, while workshop and photography chambers align with the reception zone. A circumferential circulation path embracing the courtyard instills kinetic fluidity, generating multilayered vistas and step-transitioned scenography that embodies the essence of wandering through a contemplative landscape.

Authenticity: Returning Perception to the Present. Within the project, we preserved the original exposed concrete beams and columns, while deploying cyclical, multivalent materials to craft a realm of natural veracity imbued with layered perceptual richness.

Greenery and decorative objects

Analysis of worksop

Resonating with the proprietor’s overseas stainless steel casting operations, the entry corridor and strategic interventions of metallic elements manifest industrial legacy. We selected replenishable marine plywood as the primary material for dining and workshop zones, forging a contrapuntal harmony of thermal and chromatic contrast against the ambient context.

In the lounge area, a Roche Bobois Mah Jong sofa was selected per the proprietor’s preference. Inspired by modular tile systems, this design exhibits volumetric dominance with reconfigurable topography, embodying cognitive openness through combinatorial freedom — perpetually accommodating moments of tactile repose.

Vibrant chromatics imbue the space with kinetic vitality, functioning as an ocular focalizer. Contrasting this, the primitive stone coffee table exhibits tectonic rawness — its coarse textural grain, mass-dominant materiality, and visibly anthropic chisel traces forge a material dissonance with the Mah Jong sofa’s anthropic warmth, generating a deliberate sensory collision.

The material dialectic extends to luminaires: above the dining table, a pendant light fuses a heritage timber lintel with acrylic elements via participatory reassembly. This transcends mere upcycling, manifesting a deliberate deconstruction-reconstruction praxis — embodying the designer’s core inquiry: to balance industrial precision and organic imperfection through tectonic truthfulness, narrating Western existentialism and Eastern natural philosophy through constructed authenticity.

Wood window

Analysis of bedroom

The bedroom eschews conventional bedding through a tectonically integrated substrate platform – a mortar-constructed plinth topped with mattresses to form a meditative repose surface. Central to the space, a demountable phytoscape employs marine-grade plywood and parametric metal frameworks, enabling iterative reconfiguration aligned with functional evolution. This constructs not a static ‘finished state’, but a metamorphic spatial system capable of participatory metabolism – a living architecture that organically adapts through user-driven transformation.

Thus, ‘Zhoumo Isle’ functions both as an Operational Continent engineered for corporate efficacy and an Architectural Refuge offering psychological sanctuary. Here, workplace pragmatism and lived poetics coexist in homeostatic symbiosis, collectively manifesting as a natural, self-regulating organism in perpetual renewal.
