The project is located in the urban area of Xianning City, Hubei Province, China. The site features a small hill covered with a naturally regenerated forest of Masson pines, spanning approximately 16,790 square meters. To the north it borders Fushan New Village, to the south a comprehensive campus with elementary and junior high schools, and to the west high-rise residential complexes and commercial streets. The local villagers hold deep affection for this pine forest and explicitly required that no pine trees be felled during the design and construction of the park. Meanwhile, villagers, residents of the high-rise buildings, and school students will all enter or pass through this small park from different directions, so the new public space must fully accommodate the needs of diverse users.

To address the site’s complex elevation changes, the design utilizes the open space between the hill and the buildings, arranging a series of gradually ascending small plazas and sports courts on the southwest side to absorb a height difference of about three meters. Recycled concrete blocks and bricks are wrapped in wire mesh to create gabion retaining walls. At the two main entrances, staggered rest platforms are built along the hillside, using the terrain to create interwoven sightlines and circulation. The overall design aims to offer maximum inclusiveness for the surrounding communities and school, meeting the needs of people of different ages and backgrounds, and creating a welcoming, nature-friendly gathering place amid the bustling city.

By thoughtfully arranging accessible ramps, the park provides safe and diverse play opportunities for citizens of all ages and makes it easy for wheelchair users to enter and explore most areas. To protect the beloved existing pine forest, the design did not conduct precise surveys of each tree or predefine forest paths on drawings. Instead, it adopted an on-site alignment approach. Construction workers and local laborers, holding white talcum powder, marked routes on the ground within the pine forest and then adjusted sections that were too steep. The resulting path pattern has a Matisse-like, naive charm.

Inside the pine forest, scattered patches of crushed stone paving and ecological soil paving do not indicate clear routes but are intended to enhance a sense of wandering and exploration. Linear low walls trace the contours of the hill, with pale lines emerging and disappearing among the trees, while also providing a sense of orientation. Because the natural Masson pine forest is fragile and susceptible to pine wilt disease, the project introduced seedlings of native Masson pine mixed forest to adjust and establish a rational tree species composition. By increasing understory biodiversity, the pine forest’s resistance to pests and disasters has been strengthened.

This small pine forest offers opportunities for people to interact with one another. The project makes the most of existing resources, preserves nearly all the pine trees, and leverages the original terrain’s elevation changes to present a park that embodies both sustainability and a sense of discovery. After completion, the park has become deeply loved by the neighboring villagers, high-rise residents, and students, especially bustling during after-school hours. This new space not only physically connects two communities but also fosters positive interactions between villagers and residential residents. It provides a fun, inclusive, and open public natural place, giving all users a stronger sense of accessibility and belonging.
