Before designing, we were committed to finding the right location: away from traditional malls, rooted in walkable neighborhoods, and part of a vibrant, non-standardized commercial community. Together, we have spearheaded a series of community food court transformations, handling everything from location selection, planning, design to construction and operations. In contrast, community food courts allocate the best positions to consumers—stalls and shops are set back, forming a backdrop to social interactions. Even on the city’s edge, the mix of companies and residents in Waigaoqiao provides a steady stream of potential visitors. The original site housed two extremes of speed. At street level, a chain of fastcasual outlets, deliveryfocused and efficiencydriven, typical of the internetpowered grabandgo dining. Inside, the Sleepless Books, with 20,000 titles across 5,000 categories – a haven for book lovers. Fast food and a quiet bookstore coexisted awkwardly in the same space. The building was solid, but there was no reason for people to stay.
