Meaning: A building, yet not a building
I’ve always been with a dream that it would be nice to build a house in the Northwest. I work mostly on construction renovation projects, but what if it could be true? When I returned to the foot of Helan Mountain three years after the renovation of Mihope Chateau, I was still shocked by the magnificence of nature. Due to the requirements of the fire code, a water tower to be built should be by the Chateau, to solve its water pressure problem of extinguishing and protection. Based on the previous good cooperation experience, the owner wanted to entrust me to design this strange-sounding annex, which may be a distinct opportunity for me as I had never been involved in such a project.
“It’s too big and obtrusive.” I thought it would be better if I didn’t cover it. But the connection between the water tower and the building is interdependent, that is, the building of the wine castle must be with the water tower. The height of the water tower is an unavoidable problem, so this seemingly temporary structure cannot be considered as a temporary building.
Site Selection: Make the irrigation pond a water tower landscape
“How to make the water tower look not isolated and not abrupt?” This question kept hovering in my mind until I saw an aerial photo in my ipad on the plane back to Shanghai.
“Yeah, why can’t we make the established irrigation pond a view of the water tower? It would be as if the water tower has been there for a long time!” Wouldn’t that make the two interdependent, Isn’t design inherently and universally connected? Isn’t the existence and form of design the result of a specific connection between its internal elements and a certain connection, interaction and dependence with other things around it? If we go on like this, why was the water tower built here? It is because there is a wine castle building here that needs to meet the fire code; why is the winery building built here? Why are the winery buildings built here? Because there are vineyards here to meet the needs of winemaking; why are the vines planted here? Why are the vines planted here? Because the vines need sufficient sunlight to grow and the Helan Mountains block the wind and sand to form a unique climate; why is there such a large irrigation pond here? It is because the vines need sufficient water to irrigate.
From the Helan Mountains to the vineyards to the irrigation ponds to the architecture of the winery and then to the water tower. The process unfolds from this interconnectedness. Thus, I found the answer – let the water tower participate in the whole ecosystem, and make the irrigation pond and the water tower become each other’s landscape.
Viewing: A viewing platform, yet not a viewing platform
When we fall into a fixed thinking about architectural forms, the traditional impression of a water tower might be four pillars holding up a water tank. Can we think outside the inherent thinking and give a new meaning to the water tower?
Brewing wine is a complex process, requiring planting, harvesting, pressing, fermentation, barrel culture, bottling, etc. They are interrelated and cannot be separated. Is it not the same with people? Need to grow, learn, practice, trial and error, perception, harvest results to experience a richer life.
What if the experience of life is condensed in this small shell and a window of dialogue with Helan Mounts are established? And how should this path of experience be set up? Like climbing a mountain, we struggle to climb over high mountains and crags, constantly challenging ourselves. Perhaps the relationship between man and nature is so delicate!
A 100-meter-long path between vineyards leads us through the gerberas to a 12-meter-high entrance like a mountain stream crevice. The entrance is faintly lighted and at first extremely narrow, only one person can pass through. The path spirals up through the building’s entrance in a dark space. The sun sets through the openings in the western wall and spills into the interior, revealing the slightest sound of wind. There is no cushioned platform in the 15-meter-high spiral staircase, so I hope people can sense the physical changes that are taking place. After a few more steps, the room opens up. A large area of light came straight ahead, and the spiral staircase took us from the interior through a 6-meter diameter circular hole into the air outside.
The staircase cantilevered out 4 meters like a ribbon floating in the air, without any structural support at the bottom. We were suspended in mid-air and walked slowly, looking at the distant mountains and endless vineyards, the full view of the wine castle was presented in front of us, and it turned out that the wine castle was so lonely and small in front of Helan Mountain, just like human beings in front of nature, full of admiration and sighing. It was as if we were pursuing some kind of faith and continued to climb. A spiral steel staircase wrapped around a square concrete wall followed the path as it turned, and one moment we were standing in the wind as cranes, the next we stopped 25 meters up in the air. Turning through a 1-meter-wide entrance into a claustrophobic space where the air seems to stand still.
The flared concrete space was empty. The view was drawn to the only large opening in this space, and the Helan Mountains in the distance were as bright, blinding and continuous as a galloping horse.
Looking back on the process from entry to the top, the hunt, the exploration, the surprise, the boldness, the open arms, the short process is full of fun. It was like life, going round and round, ups and downs, everywhere is unknown. We move closer to the railing and listen to the sounds of nature. Mountains, light, wind, land and vineyards are intertwined here.
