In the autumn of ’24, we received an invitation from the local fragrance brand “Wild Elf” to create a “Lakeside Celestial Grotto ” on Jinrong Island in Zhengzhou.

Nature as spatial intent
Penetration among layers of space

The word ‘Nature’ is not only the brand concept, but also the foundamental relationship between the environment and its occupants. The name of Wilf Elf claims the vision of immortal beings in the suburbs, which embodies the brand concept of “harmony between people and the environment, the way of nature”. The project is situated on Jinrong Island in Zhengzhou. Distinct from the enclosed shopping malls, the store faces the lake at the east, maximizing the connection between the interior and nature. The site is adjacent to the vewing platform connected by the lakeside promenade. There will be flocks of swans frolicking in the lake on sunny days.

Maximizing the integration of the lake view into the interior of the store, as well as recreating a ‘natural environment’ inside the store, has automatically become the common pursuit of us and the clients.

Building a celestial grotto by the lake
How to conceive a natural environment in the face of a lake? Guo Pu’s description of the Linwu Cave by Taihu Lake – “In present-day Wuxian County, within Taihu Lake in the south lies Baoshan Mountain. Beneath it is the Dongting Grotto, which flows beneath the water, to connect all places without obstruction, and is called the ‘earth’s vein'” (from Shan Hai Jing) – reflects a bond between the cave and the lake that embodies the deep connection between lakes, humanity, and nature ingrained in our cultural DNA. To create a celestial grotto, where one can glimpse the scenery of the lake, Indulge in the fragrance of incense and tea, and hold cultural gatherings…

The entire shop has a depth of approximately 20 meters and a width of 13 meters. At one-third of the frontage width, it is divided into two parts by three columns. The wider section, measuring 9 meters by 20 meters, serves as the “Stone Chamber,” functioning as the main product display and experience area as well as the cashier. The narrower section, approximately 3 meters by 20 meters, is designated as the “Stone Corridor,” which serves as a platform for public cultural activities. The clients regularly invites artists and Boutique brands to hold exhibitions here.

Taking advantage of the two floor-to-ceiling curtain walls, some natural structures in the grotto, such as fragmentary mountains and residual shoals, extend from the interior to the exterior. They not only resolve the height difference between the indoor and the outdoor but also serve as an invitation to the pedestrians, seamlessly connecting the interior and the exterior. In the rock landscape, lamps are randomly embedded, in which the products can be placed, forming a natural “open-air fragrance museum” in the outdoor venue.

Natural Materials
The most significant challenge in this spatial design was employing raw stones for furniture. We, along with the clients, were on a driving tour to visit stone quarries one by one in Baoding, Hebei. Every piece of rock was carefully selected, and we stayed with the workers throughout the processing to ensure they were shaped into the aimed size, form, and texture. Consequently, through on-site arrangement, each stone was positioned precisely where it belonged in the appropriate status.

The textures of various materials exposed under the natural light in every detail

During this process, we realized that nature has its own appreance. What we should do is observing, respecting, an appropriate positioning, and the process itself is delivered in a natural method. Adhere to the principles of ‘staying with nature’, the flooring uses limestone, the wall is coated with Yujing stone paint, the sculptural lamps are made of titanium-plated stainless steel, dark woodwork is applied, and traditional Chinese silk fabric…

结语 Coclusion
This project has thoroughly explored the possibilities in “natural commercial space” . Benefiting from the profound resonance we shared with the client from the very beginning of this project. The store design incorporates both the basic functions of commercial store (the Stone Chamber), an artistic space for exhibitions (the Stone Corridor), and an outdoor landscape that integrates with the environment (platforms and piers). These three elements are unified under the vision of a “celestial cave by the lake.”
