Site Context: Lush Mountains and Clear Waters
Anji is a city embraced by verdant mountains and meandering clear rivers. It is renowned as the “Bamboo Hometown of China” and, more significantly, the birthplace of the “Two Mountains” philosophy. The site is located in the southern part of Anji County, at the core of the Liangshan Future Sci-Tech City. It is established on a former industrial zone on the edge of the existing urban area. This former factory district is being progressively regenerated and developed into the heart of the Liangshan Future Sci-Tech City.

The urban plains begin to taper here, with the mountains on both sides drawing closer, flanking the central flowing Huxi River as it winds its way north to Lake Tai.

Design Concept: Two Mountains Converging into a Valley
The naturally elegant silhouette of the surrounding mountains provided the primary inspiration for the architecture. The design concept, termed “Two Mountains Converging into a Valley,” manifests in a form where two architectural masses intersect and merge, reminiscent of two mountain ranges meeting to form a valley. The rooflines of the two flanking structures rise and fall in a rhythmic cadence, evoking the layered ridges of a continuous mountain range.
▼整体造型如两条山脉交汇穿插,reminiscent of two mountain ranges meeting to form a valley

The rooflines of the two flanking structures rise and fall in a rhythmic cadence

The roof resembles split bamboo strips, woven together to form a panoramic landscape scroll. The soaring rooflines, achieved through a highly tensile curved structural form, mimic the resilience of bamboo—bending without breaking. This also embodies the tenacious and untrammeled spirit exemplified by Anji literati, represented by the master Wu Changshuo.

Functional Layout: Cross-Shaped Plan

The building adopts a cross-shaped spatial organization for its functions: key public spaces are located within the inner section of the cross, while peripheral areas house auxiliary functions such as logistics and service support.

The east-west gallery serves as the most crucial axial space, connecting Lingfeng South Road, the urban arterial road to the east, with the natural waterfront landscape belt along the Huxi River to the west. The exhibition hall is situated north of the gallery, while the hotel functions are arranged to the south. This corridor employs a lightweight yet robust structural form, ensuring a transparent visual effect that preserves the iconic “view of the mountains and water” along this urban landscape axis.

The north-south axis, known as the “Convention Valley,” connects the Cultural and Art Center in the north to the Urban Business District in the south. This expansive indoor north-south space serves as the busiest public area of the convention center and functions as a vibrant, all-weather marketplace during exhibition events.

Flanking this north-south axis are the 10,000-square-meter main exhibition hall and the 5,000-square-meter multi-functional exhibition hall, respectively. Both halls feature column-free spaces achieved through long-span truss structures. The overall steel trusses arch along the roof profile, creating clean and powerful lines that are fully exposed to view within the main hall. The varying heights of the roof structure form clerestory windows, which also serve the practical need of providing ample natural daylight for the exhibition halls during daytime use.

On the western side of the site, landscape commercial areas are arranged, resembling the rolling foothills of a mountain range, gently scattered along the banks of the Huxi River.

The architectural details utilize materials such as aluminum panels and HUPC to create rich and dynamic plays of light and shadow, evoking the textured curvature of bent bamboo strips.

The entire architectural complex mirrors the essence of a mountain range—at times crouching low against the earth, at other moments soaring upward, and elsewhere stretching gracefully into the distance. Employing lines reminiscent of natural landscapes, it extends organically, creating a landmark along the green mountains and clear waters that seamlessly integrates with both the environment and the urban character.
