Li Xuerui, the women’s singles badminton champion at the 2012 London Olympics, retired and returned to her hometown in Dadukou, Chongqing, continuing her dedication to sports. This public fitness center, named after her and operated under her involvement, is more than just a functional sports venue. It stands as a community landmark that pays tribute to the Olympic spirit through its architectural form and narrates a story of growth.

Project Context

The project is situated within a sports park in Dadukou District, surrounded by established residential communities, hospitals, and the Li Xuerui Badminton School. The site slopes from north to south, with the southern side leveling with the park’s outdoor sports fields and the northern side adjoining non-construction land. The design skillfully bridges the park landscape with the urban interface, aiming to create a public sports space that balances professionalism and openness, allowing the champion’s influence to benefit every citizen.

Design Concept

Ruì – The appearance of a sprouting blade of grass

The evolution of the building’s volume from “soft curves” to “rigid straight lines” not only cleverly responds to the site’s topography but also metaphorically represents an athlete’s journey from initial budding and flexibility to ultimate resilience and triumph. It interprets the unique blend of strength and grace inherent in female athleticism. The architecture itself, through its silent yet powerful upward momentum, conveys the unyielding Olympic spirit and sporting belief.

Place Making

Functional Integration Adapting to the Terrain

The space is divided into two main north-south sections. The southern section houses 4 VIP courts and accompanying leisure terraces, while the northern section accommodates a large arena with 16 standard courts. The design makes full use of the height difference by adding a mezzanine level in the central and southern areas. This ingeniously incorporates supporting facilities such as table tennis, gym, squash, a café, and locker rooms with showers, achieving clear circulation and compact, efficient functional integration.

The Continuously Growing Facade

The building facade uses white as its base. The curved bottom section is designed as stepped planter boxes, allowing real greenery to spread from the park onto the building like a carpet, transforming the metaphor of “sprouting grass” into tangible reality. The facade is adorned with horizontal stripes in red and gray, resembling growth rings or graduations that record the rhythm of progress, further reinforcing the sense of continuous, upward momentum in the horizontal direction.

Immersive experience space nodes

A skylight is installed above the main entrance. Sunlight filters through it, filling the lobby and imparting a sense of natural inspiration and emotion to those who enter.

The semi-circular grand staircase inside the entrance transcends its function as mere circulation. It becomes a spiritual space symbolizing “ascent,” and can also serve as a narrative stage in the future to showcase the champion’s journey.

The color scheme for the indoor courts replicates that of the 2012 London Olympic Games venues. This allows players, as they swing their rackets, to feel as if they are transcending time and space, experiencing the pinnacle competitive atmosphere of Li Xuerui’s gold-medal moment.

The Li Xuerui Public Fitness Center started from a name and a spirit, ultimately materializing as an architectural entity that breathes with the park and lives with the community. It transcends the scope of a mere sports facility, becoming a “spiritual fueling station” that uses spatial narrative and form to inspire. Here, every curve, every line, every ray of light collectively tells a story about growth, resilience, and glory, inspiring everyone who arrives to grow upward and climb their own peak in their personal arena.
