Due to the special function and form of ancestral halls and residential buildings, how to better tap the potential of such architectural Spaces and places and make them more closely related to the current daily life, so that people can not only experience the beauty of traditional architectural Spaces, but also feel the characteristics of The Times of specific spatial environment, and play an active role in daily work and life? Organic integration into the real life environment is the focus of many architects’ concern and thinking. Due to the different times and social backgrounds, historical buildings are faced with a series of practical problems of revitalization and renewal. How the sunlight of the past shines into the reality and leads to a deep correlation dialogue about time and space is a topic that the author pays more attention to.
several ancient buildings left over from the Ming and Qing dynasties on the campus were retained

During the planning and construction of Guangzhou University Town in 2003, several ancient buildings left over from the Ming and Qing dynasties in Suishi Village on the campus of South China University of Technology were retained. These preserved buildings have been abandoned for nearly ten years because they have not been renovated, repaired and utilized in a timely manner, resulting in the loss of many precious brick carvings, wood carvings, stone ornaments and other objects, and the old houses are leaking, overgrown with weeds, and almost in ruins.
▼充分激活岭南明清古建筑群,fully activate the ancient buildings of Ming and Qing Dynasties in Lingnan

Before we took over this project, some teams had proposed the overall transformation plan, but the effect was not satisfactory, so we had the opportunity to do a new thinking. After the launch of the project, it has undergone many changes, such as functional positioning, cultural heritage building qualitative, investment adjustment, etc., from 2013 to 2023, and finally completed the renovation and restoration, and officially named Lingnan Architecture Academic Exchange and Exhibition Center. In my book Six Styles of Architecture, the author summarizes traditional experience, modernist masters and contemporary diversified architectural creation cases and their inspiration, and puts forward six creative techniques and techniques of “continuous, protracted, gradual, abstract, seasonal, and flowing” to guide architectural creation practice. In order to fully activate the ancient buildings of Ming and Qing Dynasties in Lingnan and make them better integrate into the current campus life, the design adopts the strategy of “micro-intervention and large activation” guided by “six architectural styles”, and has achieved some good results.

The restored ancestral halls and residences are used as archives, exhibitions, and traditional ceramic paper-cutting workshops. A restored conference room on the first floor for academic exchange; The restored two-story small house is used as a place for reception, display and rest, and has added public toilets, landscape water and other facilities. As a whole, the revitalized and updated architectural complex presents a very distinctive spatial environment, demonstrating the design intention of the place construction that transcends the dialogue between time and space that our team wanted to emphasize at the beginning. It also expresses the idea that the author pays tribute to Louis Isadore Kahn’s pursuit of spiritual space with “six architectural styles”.

Cultural roots and settlement core

Lingnan Architecture Academic Exchange and Exhibition Center is located in the campus of South China University of Technology in Xiaoguweidao, near the landscape lake in the central and northern part of the city. It mainly includes two ancestral halls, five ancient buildings with brick and wood structure and two restored civil houses, among which the oldest ancestral hall dates back to the middle period of Kangxi Dynasty. After the overall revitalization and renewal of the architectural complex, it integrates with the landscape lake wetland to form a good dialogue relationship between seeing and being seen, which not only retains the essence and meaning of traditional architectural space, but also has unique characteristics of The Times, creating a core of inheritance of traditional culture, and becoming a beautiful landscape on the campus. This spiritual heritage is a very important cultural asset for a newly built campus that is only 20 years old. The University Town campus of South China University of Technology, because of this excellent cultural and historical landscape, has the roots of culture, and has become a unique scene in all campuses of the university town.

The highlight of the design is the introduction of an octagonal pavilion in the original building group. This octagonal pavilion is a roof entity in the top view, but at the plane level, it feels like a empty space without an enclosed entity. This virtual space becomes a medium to connect the original buildings of different ages, different functions and different forms. This medium creates the cultural roots of the architectural features and the spiritual connotation of the core of the settlement with the least amount of intervention – the least amount of architectural language, the simplest building materials, and the simplest installation and construction methods.

2,古今关联、时空对话ancient and modern connection, space and time dialogue

As a whole, Lingnan Architecture Academic Exchange and Exhibition Center goes far beyond the importance of individual ancestral halls and dwellings as cultural relics, and builds a special place through holistic planning, landscape, architecture and interior design. Here, a clear distinction can be made between the old and the more recent elements, which coexist in a very harmonious manner.
▼以现代简约的语言回应历史,responds to history with modern and simple language

The Octagonal Pavilion with micro-intervention responds to history and looks forward to the future with modern and simple language, which is both independent and integrated. The pavilion is surrounded by shallow dark landscape water, forming a mirror effect, making the overall space atmosphere present illusory colors, which not only magnifies the spatial scale, but also relates the time and space well. It is the most eye-catching highlight of the project, showing continuous, extended and gradual characteristics.

▼修复后古建筑群,the ancient buildings after renovation

Ancient and modern space and elements meet in this special dimension, triggering a series of dialogues in time and space, the lake is clear, the reflection is deep, the courtyard is deep, the willows are deep, the architecture dialogue, the space dialogue, the environment dialogue, the new and old dialogue. When the night falls, the lights are illuminated, and the light and shadow are transformed and exquisite. It seems to pass through the special field of time and space, transmitting the ancient culture and inheritance to the present and radiating to the future.

Juxtaposition of old and new, inheritance and innovation
The overall design of Lingnan Architecture Academic Exchange and Exhibition Center inherits the spirit of innovation, making old and new elements contrast and complement each other to form a dramatic place space. The seven historic buildings have been restored to their original appearance as much as possible. The restored two-storey and single-storey houses are constructed with modern reinforced concrete frames and are partially decorated with oyster-shell walls commonly used in Lingnan dwellings, while prefabricated concrete grid blocks are used to simulate the latticed Windows of traditional buildings, making the new buildings self-contained in terms of structure, form and language, and harmoniously related to the original system.
▼新旧相融,the complex blends old and new

▼亭子详图,pavilion section and detail

The newly added four-gabled octagonal pavilion is constructed from a completely modern concept, with eight cast-in-place fair-faced concrete columns fitted with prefabricated timber elements, a skillful blend of cast-in-place and assembly. The smooth fair-faced concrete columns were cast in-situ using PVC round tubes as formwork, with a smooth surface, fine texture and good finish. The top timber frame of the pavilion is made of unitized small-sized pineapple lattice rectangular timbers joined together with modern steel plates and screws to form a single unit, and the top is finished with linoleum tiles. The juxtaposition of the newly added elements with the old and the new is interdependent, reflecting the concept of heritage and innovation. The finished effect presents an abstract, seasonal and fluid character. In order to minimize the damage and impact of the construction process on the existing ancient buildings last year, reflecting the original intention of “micro-intervention”, the combination of simple cast in and prefabricated installation is adopted to deal with specific places in a special way.

4,空间交融、内外一体space integration, internal and external integration
The overall design of Lingnan Architecture Academic Exchange and Exhibition Center attempts to introduce a series of relatively “weak” Spaces and elements in the old building complex, which are like yeast, used to adhere to the original space and atmosphere, and stimulate more possibilities. Using the concept of “under the banyan Tree” in the traditional Lingnan architectural village, a space under the “empty” “umbrella” is introduced in the core position of this group of buildings to create a public centering place in the eyes of the public. After the completion, the space atmosphere of the old building is preserved to the greatest extent, and the new building elements are basically disappeared. The fully integrated scene activates the vitality of the space to the greatest extent, stimulates diversified and informal communication and interaction activities, and forms one of the most important scenes in the campus cultural activities.

▼镂空砖墙细部,detail of openwork brick wall

Eight columns of cast-in-place reinforced concrete molded from round PVC pipes define the core space of the settlement. This “nothing-free” space, as if by magic, brings together space and sight with invisible force and rises upward, expanding outward through the gaps between octagonal caisson canopy. The ancient architectural entity and the “nothingness” space under the umbrella blend with each other, producing a new space and experience. Ancient places and modern spirits are mixed and blurred here. The ancient space is inherited to the present, and a new space charm is derived. Here, the wind is free to come and go, the sight is unhindered, and the space is one. This rich dialogue relationship inspires a strong sense of place between nature and architecture, people and space. This atmosphere helps the public to experience and understand the architect’s pursuit of place construction that transcends time and spatial dialogue.
