Located in Zhongbei Town, Tianjin, and next to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the former Meiya Automobile Factory has been empty for years. Since the Grand Canal has been successfully granted as one of the World Cultural Heritages, this once industrial area is designated to be renovated into the OCT Loft Creative Culture Park, a new urban model to attract creative business to stimulate new urban lifestyle along the Grand Canal.

More than 30 years ago, the Yellow Tianjin "noodles" running all over the streets in northern cities became an indelible urban memory in the hearts of Chinese people who had just learned to take a taxi. Tracing back to the source, Meiya automobile factory, which produces it, is located in Zhongbei Town, Xiqing District, Tianjin. Outside the wall is the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal, which has flowed for thousands of years. Now this section of the canal has been transformed into a beautiful riverside green belt, and the factories within the fence have been relocated for many years. The success of the Grand Canal's World Heritage Application prompted Zhongbei town to introduce OCT loft Creative Park, which not only wants to realize industrial transformation, but also hopes to activate urban life on both sides of the canal with new urban space types.

In order not to affect the follow-up development, as the start-up project of the whole park, "canal creation center", is located in the most insignificant plant in the northeast corner of the plant. Although facing the street, it is located at the farthest end of the direction of the flow of people and hidden behind a cluster of poplar trees. This disadvantageous position inspired the design inspiration instead: a nearly 200 meter long folded step grew from the plant to connect the entrance. It not only metaphors the restart of the stranded ship on the Bank of the Grand Canal, but also skillfully enlarges the volume of the plant and strengthens the sense of etiquette when approaching it. Near the front, the steps bulge and become a majestic staircase leading to the second floor porch, which suddenly makes the simple workshop mountain wall with buttresses and columns look solemn and elegant, like a Greek temple, but the sense of palace is ready to come out.

Walking into the second floor porch, the main body of the exhibition hall is designed to be separated from the outer skin of the gable. Under the transparent skylight, the contrast between the old and the new is depicted with the light and shadow of the sun: on one side is the inner side of the gable, which remembers all kinds of traces of use and construction without carving; On one side is a large glass wall with high height, which shows the large exhibition hall that needs to be carefully planned on the inner side. In contrast to this open space, an arc-shaped stainless steel walkway leads the audience from the tunnel to the exhibition hall.

The original workshop of more than 2000 square meters needs to be transformed into a space of more than 5000 square meters. In addition to the canal innovation and Exhibition Center as a large-scale exhibition, there is also the headquarters office with strict bureaucratic system and its supporting facilities, as well as ancillary functions such as reception, conference and coffee. Together, it needs to become a three-story space. The storey height of the original building is also relatively limited. The lower chord of the roof truss is only 7.5 meters from the ground. To make use of the roof truss space, an independent structure needs to be established. These conditions ultimately lead to an organizational structure with simple layout but rich spatial levels and logical viewing lines: the exhibition hall and office are divided into two on the plane and three on the section, and the main exhibition hall is sandwiched between the offices on the ground floor and the upper floor to maximize the interaction between each other. In this way, after the ground of the main exhibition hall is raised to the second floor elevation, the audience and the most attractive roof truss of the plant are also close.

In such an ordinary workshop, when people are placed in the matrix of overhead roof truss three meters high, they not only feel the strong smell of industrial workshop, but also experience the spatial order brought by the repeated rhythm of architectural framework, as if they had entered a palace that pays attention to etiquette. The dark red color of the rusty steel plate from the outside to the city appears calm and steady; The white tension net outside the upper space for maintaining the finish is intertwined in the intricate roof truss, which is hazy and elegant. In the atmosphere of white space dotted with some rust plates, the black grandstand sinking to the ground floor has become the first spatial focus of the exhibition hall, and Zhang shows the power of palace like space.

The layout of the main exhibition floor is in two homocentric squares. The long walls on both sides are slanted with a small angle to achieve a better tension between the new and the old. Several circular windows are installed to mimic the ship portholes to recall the theme of the re-setting sail of the old factory building.

Le Corbusier used to say: “une maison, un palals.” Here, a humble factory building is sensitively treated as a palace as well by a set of strategies: firstly, not to redo elevation but just to furnish the new ground; secondly, enlarging the building image by means of attaching a long exuberant tail to it; thirdly, glorifying the industrial space aura by exposing original structure in an intimate way; and most importantly, embedding space within space to generate unexpected impact. In the age of the post-industrial time, we are dealing with more and more industrial heritages. It is time to let it happen: a factory building, a palace.

Hidden in the very center of the building lies the gem of the Grand Canal Creative Center — the Flowing Water Temple. It is a dark and deep space dominated by a huge multimedia installation. Unlike conventional exhibition, this installation indeed is an archive of the Grand Canal information, presented in a way of myth and mystery.
