Designed by KAAN Architecten as a calm landmark within the former Philips industrial area, the building is constructed almost entirely of timber, offering a deliberate alternative to conventional, concrete-dominated urban construction. Defined by a clear modular grid and continuous balconies, Matchbox brings together offices and social rental apartments around a communal courtyard garden. The building strengthens the connection between the industrial zone to the south and the new residential developments to the north.

Strijp S exemplifies large-scale urban transformation. The former Philips factory site is evolving into a vibrant city district that preserves industrial heritage while introducing new housing and cultural programs. In this context, KAAN Architecten presents Matchbox, which occupies a triangular plot at the entrance to the area, completing the wedge-shaped master plan and contributing to a greener, more sustainable urban environment.

Matchbox 毗邻高达70米的 Trudo Tower。项目没有追求建筑奇观式的表达，而是选择了一种克制且理性的设计方式，唤起人们对早期现代主义工厂建筑的联想。最终呈现为一个轮廓清晰、独立矗立的建筑体量，四个立面均获得同等表达。项目名称“Matchbox（火柴盒）”源于立面网格的节奏感，这种节奏通过统一的22厘米木结构模数得以呈现，令人联想到排列整齐的火柴。立面采用 Azobé 硬木作为承重构件和外廊元素，并结合竹质填充板材；这两种材料都会随着时间自然风化为银灰色。阳台和通高可开启门扇增强了建筑的开放性，并支持日常使用。
Situated next to the 70-meter-high Trudo Tower, Matchbox avoids architectural spectacle in favor of a sober, rational approach that evokes early-modernist factory buildings. The result is a clearly defined, freestanding volume with four equally expressed façades. The name Matchbox refers to the rhythm of the façade grid, articulated through a consistent 22 cm timber module, reminiscent of matches. The façade combines Azobé timber for load-bearing and gallery elements with bamboo infill panels, both of which will naturally weather to a silvery gray tone. Balconies and full-height opening doors enhance openness and support everyday use.

建筑总建筑面积约为5,000平方米，在功能性基座之上设置了36套社会租赁住宅。首层容纳办公空间、零售和餐饮业态，其中包括具有社会参与属性的咖啡馆 Bakkie 040，为街道界面注入活力。Trudo 总部位于二层和三层，被打造为健康的办公环境，通过开放式楼梯和彼此连通的空间促进交流。住宅楼层既面向内部庭院，也俯瞰周边城市。位于基座屋顶上的庭院为居民提供了一处受保护的共享户外空间，为 Apparatenfabriek 引入自然光、空气和开敞感。
With a total floor area of approximately 5,000 m², the building accommodates 36 social rental dwellings above a functional plinth. The ground floor hosts workspaces, retail, and hospitality, including Bakkie 040, a socially engaged coffee bar that animates the street level. Trudo’s headquarters occupy the first and second floors and are designed as healthy work environments with open staircases and interconnected spaces. The residential levels overlook both the inner courtyard and the surrounding city. A rooftop courtyard atop the plinth provides a protected communal outdoor space for residents, bringing daylight, air, and a sense of openness to the Apparatenfabriek.

该项目由住房协会 Trudo 开发，展示了社会租赁住房如何融合建筑品质、可持续性与宜居性。Matchbox 被设计为一座二氧化碳中和建筑。除玻璃和预制混凝土抗侧力核心筒外，建筑结构几乎完全采用生物基材料，包括木梁、木柱以及 CLT（交叉层压木）楼板。项目满足木结构建筑在结构完整性、声学性能和消防安全等方面的严格要求。同时，建筑符合荷兰 MIA 和 Vamil 激励计划的标准，并达到多项性能指标，包括 MPG（环境性能指数）低于0.5、可拆解潜力超过25%，以及完成建筑财务残值测算。
Developed by the housing association Trudo, the project demonstrates how social rental housing can integrate architectural quality, sustainability, and liveability. Matchbox is conceived as a CO₂-neutral building. Apart from glazing and a prefabricated concrete stability core, the structure is almost entirely bio-based, using timber beams and columns and CLT floor slabs. The project meets strict requirements for timber construction, including structural integrity, acoustics, and fire safety. It also complies with the Dutch MIA and Vamil scheme and achieves performance targets, including an MPG below 0.5, a disassembly potential exceeding 25 percent, and calculations for financial residual value.

As KAAN Architecten’s first timber building, Matchbox exemplifies an ongoing exploration of more sustainable construction methods. Vincent Panhuysen, founding partner, states: “Matchbox is a restrained building in the spirit of Strijp-S: radical in its simplicity, refined in its detailing, and generous towards the city.”
