ANNSO HILL, located in Heshun Ancient Town of Yunnan, is situated in a narrow alleyway lined with B&Bs and storefronts. The site is composed with two characteristically different lot spaces forming an inverted“L”shape, which begins with a compressed street front zone on a steep slope, and ends on a long serene hillside aligned with beautiful tall trees.

In the face of competing for every penny along the street facade, we choose a posture of being independent from the world and retreat to find the space and scale of the building. The entrance is hidden, the facade is dissolved, and the "existence" of the roof is redefined. The building climbs along the hillside, with the roof covering the hillside and folding up along the visual moving line. The mountains and forests hidden behind the houses and settlements were opened to form a new three-dimensional facade with the nearby buildings.

This is the facade of Chinese landscape painting in the Song Dynasty, just like fan Kuan's fictional layered landscape world in his travel map of streams and mountains. The facade of lying down has become a street courtyard where people can stay, talk or take photos, rather than a simple boundary wall of a home stay. The narrow streets were opened in an instant, and the social theme was introduced, which awakened the context of the neighborhood streets of the ancient town.

The slightly opened entrance between the eaves and the ground of "an ruoshu mountain" introduces travelers into an "other world" indoors. Here, the boundaries of roof, wall, elevation and ground are blurred, and the space is a "field" rather than an "architectural field vs. architectural room" cut by traditional beams and columns. The functions and moving lines inside the building respond to the trend of the mountain one by one. Restaurants, bars, performances, tea tables, reading and cultural creation are arranged in turn along the terrain and connected up and down. Time is incorporated into the field, and the activity scene is constantly occurring and interacting.

We put in a "ladder" to deal with the huge height difference of 20 meters of the site itself. It goes straight to the sky from the streets and alleys, with a total of 133 steps, which makes the whole climbing process full of the ritual sense of "asking questions" and makes the climbing process clear. More importantly, the ladder has also become the core clue of the two sites in series, enhancing the relevance and integrity of the site. The top of the connecting ladder is another "flying corridor" shuttling between the mountains and forests. The moving line back to the house is overhead in the mountains. The crisscross of light and shadow is like a stream in the mountains, showing the due posture of the mountains and forests.

A flying corridor connects all the guest rooms in the back of the serene and tranquil hill. All rooms are unique in their formal reactions to site specifications and their particularly exclusive axis of view. An architectural operation of 2.5-dimensional spatial strategy is introduced to identify specific visual movements and programmatic performances within each space. All walls are shifting and being slightly carved-in, in order to create another dimension of spatial reading and also for practical usage. There is an emphasis on the play of light and shadow through manipulating the geometrical relationship between walls and windows. All objects in the hotel-rooms are arranged in the lower horizontal zone, leaving the above space to collect the grand views of the outside.

▼客房#12,寻找每一间的最佳景观面,room#12: to capture the optimum view from each room

Here, the subtle relationship between building wall and space boundary is discussed and tested. We want to emphasize that the wall is not unbreakable. Sometimes it is a fragile barrier that can be scattered or disappeared by soft light and shadow in an instant. Each guest room adopts the 2.5-dimensional "micro wall" space technique (similar to the combination of relief and strong perspective), which makes the main side wall slightly concave and develop another inadvertent space. With the change of day and night light, time is introduced, and the space begins to dislocation and become immeasurable. Human orientation and vision become two different groups of clues, where light and shadow, memory and story happen.

From entering "an zhiruoshu mountain", time is no longer linear, and space is no longer regular and square. The 2.5 dimension is not a passive application of experience, but a weak boundary to build a new visual memory and advocate the possibility of experience and perception. This is what we want to define as "great beauty without words, if you live in peace".
