Zhulin Pan is the most traditional agricultural settlement on the western Sichuan Plain, which has been in existence in Sichuan for thousands of years. Bamboo materials are considered the entirety of life by the people in the rural forest pan of western Sichuan, who have used bamboo to the extreme. The intangible cultural heritage of Lin Panli, "Qingcheng Horse Chair," is a synonym for the handmade bamboo chair passed down by the Ma family for three generations.

The project is located in Majialin, Mangcheng Village, at the foot of Qingcheng Mountain. According to the process of traditional family manual chair workshop, the design has made a new idea, changing the original single production mode of "life work sale" to a diversified cultural and creative consumption scene of "life work experience leisure consumption"; The workshop area is divided into three buildings that do not interfere with each other according to the traditional horse chair process: a bamboo material room (stacking and rough processing); Workshop (production and experience); Tea shop (for resting and drinking tea).

The Qingcheng Horse Chair Workshop fully embodies the Sichuan lifestyle attitude of "harmony between heaven and man" in the western Sichuan forest area. The clear air flowing out of the mountains flows through the unobstructed passage of the Qingcheng Horse Chair Workshop, and the light and shadow slowly brush through the entire room, which perfectly embodies the artistic conception of "living in a fairy town".

The project site fully respects the local natural environment and strives for harmonious integration between the building and the environment. The main building materials are made of cheap and renewable local main materials, using fully handmade mortise and tenon structures. The project is tailored to local conditions, arranged reasonably, and draws on traditional passive energy-saving design strategies to create a comfortable microclimate and diverse spaces. Taking into account accessibility design and incorporating experiential and leisure elements, it brings vitality to traditional rural handicraft workshops. The project has improved the living environment quality of traditional villages in a low-cost and sustainable way, making contributions to rural revitalization and intangible cultural heritage protection.

Today's Horse Chair Workshop is located in the ancient village forest at the foot of Qingcheng Mountain, and has become a symbiosis of traditional forest and innovative bamboo buildings. The project consists of three bamboo buildings with different shapes (material workshop, workshop, and tea workshop), and the biggest highlight is the workshop where light and shadow can "freely sway". The design inspiration comes from Li Bai's "Difficulty in the Shu Road" where "Silkworm bushes and fish and ducks, how boundless the founding of the country", resembling the silk cocoon in a secluded forest, symbolizing the beauty of the golden cocoon used by the ancestor Silkworm bushes to persuade silkworms. Under the bamboo leaf shaped roof, a golden abstract pattern of bamboo bushes shines brightly, resembling golden threads in a cocoon from a distance. And all of this is to blend in with the surrounding forest scenery.

Zhulinpan is the most traditional agricultural settlement on the western Sichuan Plain, which has been in existence in Sichuan for thousands of years. Bamboo materials are considered the entirety of life by the rural residents of Linpan in western Sichuan, who have used bamboo to the extreme. Among them, the intangible cultural heritage of Linpanli - "Qingcheng Horse Chair" is a synonym for the handmade bamboo chair passed down by the Ma family for three generations. Nowadays, this rural intangible cultural heritage is facing decline, and it is urgent to save traditional folk crafts. Architects Liu Weibing and others voluntarily designed and updated the Qingcheng Horse Chair Workshop. The newly built workshop is made of fully handmade bamboo, without any nails, and focuses on promoting the interaction between heritage protection and life improvement in ancient villages through intangible cultural heritage.

The project leader architect Liu Weibing introduced that the updated project consists of three parts: bamboo art workshop, bamboo material workshop, and tea workshop, with a total area of 349 square meters. The workshop started construction in November 2020 and was completed in June 2021. The design fully respects the profound historical culture and good natural environment, drawing on the traditional passive energy-saving design strategy of the Sichuan Western Forest Pan with a thousand years of history, creating a comfortable microclimate and diverse spaces, and playing a good demonstration effect on energy conservation and emission reduction in rural construction.
