上海体育场是1997年第八届全国运动会开幕式的主会场，可容纳观众近8万人。体育场坐落于市区的西南部，与原有的上海体育馆、游泳馆和奥林匹克俱乐部共同组成上海体育中心。体育场体型为直径273m的圆形平面，中间为符合国际标准的草地足球场，周边设400m跑道及各类田径比赛场地。按国际比赛要求，底层设有赛前、赛后控制中心，运动员裁判员、官员、组委会等各类专业用房。除普通观众席外还设有主席台、记者席及100间包厢看台。利用看台下部有效空间设置了9层高，拥有360间标准客房的四星级酒店、体育俱乐部、各类展示厅、商场、新闻中心等。体育场造型简洁、新颖，富有时代气息。

上海体育场这座跨世纪的大型建筑，设计上采用了外环圆形，内环椭圆形，呈波浪式马鞍形的整体结构，尽可能为观众提供最佳的视线质量。场周围宽30米，长1000米的巨大平台，则保证了观众疏散时道路畅通。当年体育场设计者将宾馆、包厢、裙房等设施纳入总体规划方案，为以后开展多种经营创造了条件。观众席上方采用马鞍形大悬挑钢管空间屋盖结构，覆以乳白色薄膜材料，面积为3.6万平方米，主席台正上方的一根最长单臂悬挑梁长73.5米，为世界建筑史之最。特别是体育场内第一块种植于黄沙之上的沙土草皮，完全达到了国际标准。从美国引进的“高羊毛”和“早熟禾”两种草皮，地下安装了排水系统，足球场上一片葱绿。

In particular, the first sandy turf planted on yellow sand in the stadium has fully reached international standards. The "high wool" and "Kentucky bluegrass" turf introduced from the United States have drainage systems installed underground, and the football field is verdant.
