BIG亮相2025威尼斯建筑双年展：《古老的未来：架起不丹传统与创新的桥梁》
BIG建筑事务所（Bjarke Ingels Group）携全新展览《古老的未来：架起不丹传统与创新的桥梁》亮相第十九届威尼斯国际建筑双年展，本届双年展由Carlo Ratti担任总策展人。展览位于威尼斯军械库（Arsenale di Venezia），以不丹盖勒普国际机场（Gelephu International Airport）的设计为切入点，呈现该项目如何在现代科技的语境中规模化推进木工雕刻这一传统文化技艺。不丹工匠在现代机械的辅助下，以手工雕刻出繁复而精致的图案，并将其应用于机场斜交网格结构的木梁之上。与此同时，展览现场还同步放映由Laurian Ghinitoiu与Arata Mori联合拍摄的纪录片，全程追踪了项目从设计构思到建造实施的全过程。
At the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia curated by Carlo Ratti, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group presents Ancient Future: Bridging Bhutan’s Tradition and Innovation. On view at the Arsenale di Venezia, Ancient Future brings to life the design of Bhutan’s new Gelephu International Airport, celebrating how the rich cultural tradition of Bhutanese woodcarving can be scaled by modern technology. The exhibition showcases Bhutanese artisans, assisted by machines, hand-carving intricate designs into wooden beams that will be used in the airport’s diagrid architecture. Accompanying the live demonstration, a documentary by Laurian Ghinitoiu and Arata Mori provides an intimate portrait of the creative process behind the exhibition.

2025年威尼斯建筑双年展以“智能.自然.人工.集体.”（Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.）为主题，BIG所推出的展览《古老的未来》，正是对此主题的有力回应。展览邀请观众重新思考手工艺的演进：它不止步于对传统的保护，更从不丹历史中汲取灵感，创造未来。这场关于“人机共创”的探索，围绕四根长达3.5米的胶合层压木梁展开。这些柱子在丹麦预制，以不丹盖勒普国际机场钻石结构为蓝本，搭建出一组等比例的原尺寸模型。其中，两根木梁由不丹工匠Sangay Thsering与Yeshi Gyeltshen以传统技艺手工雕刻，而另外两根，则由机械铣削臂依据工匠绘制的图案自动完成雕刻。人工与算法在同一材质上展开对话，共同呈现出深植于历史，并通向未来的全新语境。
Ancient Future responds to Biennale Architettura 2025’s theme, Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective., inviting viewers to imagine a new evolution of craft – one that moves beyond preservation and ensures Bhutan’s history inspires future generations. This co-creation between man and machine begins with four 3.5-m-long glulam timber beams produced in Denmark, which together form a 1:1 prototype of the diamond pattern found within the Gelephu International Airport. While two beams are hand-carved by Bhutanese artisans, Sangay Thsering and Yeshi Gyeltshen, using traditional techniques, the remaining two are carved by a robotic milling arm mirroring the craftsmen’s designs – proving that man and machine can co-exist to inspire a future built on the past.

作为不丹雕刻艺术的核心意象，龙不仅承载着深厚的民族认同，更寓意守护与力量、神圣的权威，也代表精神与物质世界的连接。在本次展览中，三条由不丹知名艺术家创作的龙，以象征性的姿态跨越时间之流，分别代表着不丹的过去、现在与未来。过去之龙，握紧宝珠，以传统造型现身，展现出不丹丰富的自然景观与国王的领导力；现在之龙，手持佛教法轮，以盖勒普正念之城项目为背景，映衬出正值转型期的国家精神，也与不丹文化中的“四灵兽”深度呼应；未来之龙，托举着双金刚杵，象征稳定、韧性和全局视野，同时强调精神和谐、富于适应力，亦勾勒出不丹持续发展的未来图景。
The symbol of the dragon lies at the heart of the carvings, reflecting Bhutan’s strong national identity and embodying protection, power, divine authority, and a bridge between the spiritual and material realms. For the exhibition, three unique dragons were created by established Bhutanese artists to symbolize Bhutan’s past, present, and future. The past is represented by a traditional dragon clutching jewels, reflecting the nation’s abundant natural beauty and the leadership of its monarchs; the present features a dragon holding a Buddhist Dharma Wheel, capturing Bhutan’s current transformative moment through the Gelephu Mindfulness City project and its connection to the Four Dignities; and the future envisions a dragon bearing the Double Vajra – embodying stability, resilience, and holistic vision while emphasizing the importance of spiritual harmony, adaptability, and visionary growth for Bhutan’s continued evolution.

作为前瞻呈现，由 Laurian Ghinitoiu 与 Arata Mori联合执导的纪录片率先释出预告片，完整版将于今秋2025 年威尼斯建筑双年展闭幕之际正式发布。 影片采用交替的镜头语言，将人类与机器的动作并置呈现。色彩、节奏与声响在画面中微妙流转，相互呼应，在细节中凸显出本质的差异。动态与声音的交织之中，不丹的真实影像悄然浮现——传统音乐、建筑与舞蹈穿插其间，营造出一场视听体验，一场手工艺与代码的共舞，展现了人类与算法协同创造的潜力。
The documentary by Laurian Ghinitoiu and Arata Mori is a preview of a longer film to be released at the end of the Biennale Architettura 2025 this fall. Through alternating sequences, the film juxtaposes human and robotic gestures; their colors, movements, and sounds subtly echoing one another while highlighting the inherent differences between the two. The interplay of movements and sounds – interspersed with real-world footage from Bhutan, including the country’s traditional music, architecture, and dance – creates a visual choreography, a ballet of craft and code that speaks to the potential of human and algorithmic synergies.

By harnessing robotic technology to scale intricate human designs, the exhibition unlocks a new path forward – one that preserves the soul of the craftsmanship yet boldly shapes what lies ahead.

展览将持续至2025年11月23日。展览结束后，展出的木梁将被运回不丹，用以庆祝盖勒普国际机场建设工程的启动，该项目预计将在今冬正式动工。这座新机场将坐落于雄伟的喜马拉雅山脚下，成为未来不丹通向全球的重要门户。项目由BIG与Arup联手打造，是双方共同设计的“盖勒普正念之城”总体规划中的关键组成部分。
Ancient Future: Bridging Bhutan’s Tradition and Innovation will be on view until November 23rd, 2025. The completed beams will then travel to Bhutan to celebrate the start of construction on the Gelephu International Airport this winter. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayas, the new airport is envisioned as a global gateway to Bhutan, forming an integral part of the Gelephu Mindfulness City masterplan designed by BIG in collaboration with Arup.
