In October 2020, Nantong public cultural center was finally completed and opened after three years of design and construction. The total construction area of the cultural center is about 30000 square meters, which is composed of three functions: library, cultural center and archives. The base is located in the core plot of nenda business district in Nantong Development Zone, covering an area of about 36000 square meters. It is adjacent to Chengxing Road, an urban trunk road in the north, facing Changyuan road and Changtong road in the East and West, and Nengda Central Park in the south. It is the intersection of the central axis of the business district and the ecological landscape axis.

 

 

设计理念——白鸟栖霞、斯革斯飞

Design concept - white bird Qixia, sigusfei

 

作为平地而起的城市新区，缺乏城市历史文脉和空间特色往往是建筑师所需要面对的难题。

 

As a new urban area rising from the ground, the lack of urban historical context and spatial characteristics is often a problem that architects need to face.

 

挖掘场所基因：设计灵感来源于建筑师在现场踏勘时与基地水岸边所见的悠悠白鹭，而中央公园恰巧亦以白鹭为主题。文化中心坐落于一方静水之上，建筑南侧连续通透的折面幕墙向湖面打开，幕墙玻璃采用丝网印刷形成飞扬的“羽翼”形式，犹如张开的双翅；建筑整体轮廓起伏、灵动飘逸，传神地抽象出一幅“白鸟悠悠云自去”的生动画卷。

 

Mining site genes: the design inspiration comes from the long egrets seen by the architects on the site survey and the water bank of the base, and the Central Park also happens to take egrets as the theme. The cultural center is located on a side of still water. The continuous and transparent folded curtain wall on the south side of the building opens to the lake. The curtain wall glass is screen printed to form a flying "wing" form, like open wings; The overall outline of the building is undulating, flexible and elegant, vividly abstracting an animated scroll of "white birds leisurely and the clouds go away".

 

融合地域印象：文化中心的天际线由若干连续舒展的弧线构成，随着人的视线移动而形成步移景异、不断变化的丰富天际线效果。而连绵起伏的屋顶曲线正是江南传统聚落最具代表性的特征；“如鸟斯革，如翚斯飞”的飞檐反宇在更加灵动轻盈的江南建筑中体现得淋漓尽致。故而设计过程在现代简练的同时又融合了江南传统文脉的印象。

 

Integrate the regional impression: the skyline of the cultural center is composed of several continuous stretched arcs, which form a rich skyline effect with different walking scenes and constant changes as people's eyes move. The undulating roof curve is the most representative feature of traditional settlements in Jiangnan; The cornice anti universe of "like birds, like Hui, like flying" is vividly reflected in the more flexible and lightsome buildings in the south of the Yangtze River. Therefore, the design process is modern and concise, while integrating the impression of the traditional context of the south of the Yangtze River.

 

 

设计生成—— 一体成形

Design generation - integrated forming

 

首先，根据周边城市功能分布，形成东-档案馆、图书馆和西-文化馆的总体格局。设计并非将3个功能独立形成分散式布局，而是通过一个大型中庭有机的将三者串联、融为一体，建筑的集约化、复合化使各功能紧密的连结在一起，在缩短流线、节约用地等方面都效果显著，同时预留了未来发展的可能。其复合多元的文化综合体概念更加符合当下开放和高效的设计原则。

 

First, according to the functional distribution of surrounding cities, the overall pattern of East archives, libraries and West cultural centers will be formed. The design is not to form a decentralized layout of the three functions independently, but organically connect and integrate the three through a large atrium. The intensification and compounding of the building closely connect the functions, which has a significant effect in shortening the streamline and saving land, while reserving the possibility of future development. Its concept of complex and diverse cultural complex is more in line with the current open and efficient design principles.

 

其后，再通过“引、延、展”的一系列手法，令建筑自然伸展，与城市和自然形成相互交融渗透之态。

 

Then, through a series of techniques of "introduction, extension and Exhibition", the building naturally extends and forms a state of mutual integration and penetration with the city and nature.

 

引：为呼应城市关系，建筑边界在朝向基地周边四个方向内聚形成入口广场空间自然形成建筑形体，每个广场都与中央大厅相连接、融会贯通，形成北侧市民广场、西侧运动及生态公园、东侧纪念公园、南侧滨水休闲公园共4大主题广场公园。

 

Introduction: in response to the urban relationship, the building boundary converges in four directions around the base to form the entrance square space, which naturally forms the architectural form. Each square is connected with the central hall, forming four theme square parks, namely, the North citizen square, the West sports and ecological park, the East Memorial Park, and the South waterfront leisure park.

 

延：建筑主体向南侧伸展，朝向开阔的湖面。从而使中庭、文化馆、图书馆皆拥有如“风景长卷”、“城市巨幕”般宽大通透的景廊，仿佛悬挂在城市中央的巨大画幅。

 

Extension: the main body of the building extends to the South and faces the open lake. Thus, the atrium, the cultural center and the library all have wide and transparent view corridors like "landscape scroll" and "city screen", as if they were hanging in the center of the city.

 

展：建筑屋顶通过起伏伸展形成“翼”状的屋顶空间，南侧屋顶根据剧场顶部空间需要及图书馆的视线拓展逐渐起翘，形成如鸟斯革，如翚斯飞的优美天际线。

 

Exhibition: the roof of the building forms a "wing" shaped roof space through ups and downs. According to the needs of the roof space of the theater and the expansion of the line of sight of the library, the South roof gradually rises and tilts, forming a beautiful skyline like birds, such as Hui, Si, Fei.

 

 

建构策略—— 一语贯之、造妙入微

Construction Strategy -- consistent and subtle

 

建筑师力求以一语贯之的策略操作，在深入的建构中继续以“白鸟栖霞”这一独一元素作为创作理念的表达，避免过多手法和元素杂糅导致文化性上的削弱。

 

Architects strive to operate with a consistent strategy, and continue to use the unique element of "white bird Qixia" as the expression of creative ideas in the in-depth construction, so as to avoid the weakening of culture caused by too many techniques and elements.

 

作为新兴城区的公共建筑，应当以彰显时代性的姿态示人，但在运用当代前沿的设计语汇和理念的同时，应当把地域文脉潜移默化的融入到细部的设计中，在幕墙和百叶表皮上造妙入微。

 

As a public building in an emerging urban area, it should show itself in a contemporary manner. However, while using the contemporary cutting-edge design vocabulary and concepts, it should imperceptibly integrate the regional context into the detailed design, and create subtlety on the curtain wall and shutter skin.

 

折叠羽翼幕墙：在面向湖面展开的南立面“城市巨幕”上我们采用了折叠式丝网印刷玻璃幕墙。通过三角形的立体组合，结合与透明玻璃相间的白羽图案丝网印刷玻璃，形成羽翼舒展、层叠相间的视觉效果。同时营造明暗相间若隐若现的朦胧之美。

 

Folding wing curtain wall: on the "city screen" of the south facade facing the lake, we have adopted a folding screen printed glass curtain wall. Through the three-dimensional combination of triangles, combined with the white feather pattern screen printed glass alternating with transparent glass, a visual effect of wings stretching and overlapping is formed. At the same time, it creates a hazy beauty of light and dark.

 

立体羽翼百叶：玻璃幕墙外，设计别出心裁的采用了立体百叶的手法。在减少建筑能耗的同时，立体切割的多折面百叶形成了丰富的光影效果和生动的表面韵律。不仅如此，我们将白羽图案穿孔于立体百叶上。在呼应主题的同时，增加了建筑近人尺度的细腻层次，结合内部灯光亮化的设计，形成独特而富有文化气息的夜景效果。

 

Three dimensional wing louvers: outside the glass curtain wall, the design adopts the unique technique of three-dimensional louvers. While reducing building energy consumption, the three-dimensional cutting multi fold louvers form a rich light and shadow effect and vivid surface rhythm. Not only that, we perforated the three-dimensional shutter with white feather pattern. While echoing the theme, it increases the delicate level of the building near the human scale, and combines the design of internal lighting to form a unique and cultural night scene effect.

 

 

功能复合

南通公共文化中心功能多元复合，建筑包含一座市民图书馆、一座区级档案馆、一座500人观演厅及包含青少年及老年等活动的综合型活动中心。此外，三大功能区块之间及各自都设有开放共享、生态宜人、立体复合的特色中庭。我们通过上述大量灰空间的植入，使其在核心功能之外更复合了运动、休闲、餐饮、零售、社交、展演等多元化公共服务功能，在满足社区的公共文化服务之外，更加注重社会交往、参与互动、艺术熏陶、健康生活等多方面的人文生活关怀，从而以一种全新文化生活方式创造者和引领者的姿态呈现在城市之中。

 

Functional composition

The building includes a citizen library, a district archives, a 500 person auditorium and a comprehensive activity center including youth and elderly activities. In addition, among the three functional blocks and each of them, there are characteristic atriums with open sharing, pleasant ecology and three-dimensional compound. Through the implantation of the above-mentioned large number of gray spaces, we have made it more complex in sports, leisure, catering, retail, social networking, exhibition and other diversified public service functions in addition to its core functions. In addition to meeting the public cultural services of the community, we have paid more attention to social exchanges, participation and interaction, artistic edification, healthy life and other aspects of human life care, Thus, it is presented in the city as a creator and leader of a new cultural lifestyle.
