Project appearance

An atmosphere rich with character comes alive as one meanders into the labyrinth lanes of CC Lakda Bazaar in the folds of southern Mumbai. Rickety wheels of haathgaadis against the cobbled pathways, the clucking of sauntering hens, the buzz of saws slicing through timber, and the earthy fragrance of wood that intoxicates the air illustrate the vibrant montage of one’s rendezvous with the locale.

Functional layout

Roosted amid the bustle of this slice of the city, the Aquagreen Solutions Experience Centre explores adaptive reuse to create a sustainable milieu. Set upon a deep, rectilinear site spanning 11 feet by 77 feet, the intent focuses on creating a space that stealthily blends with its surroundings. Wearing a semipermeable skin of ochre below and white above, the façade fuses perforated metal and corrugated cement sheet fins, coyly obscuring the interiors.

The live experience centre and product display zones

New spatial narrative

The erstwhile premises functioned as an inventory warehouse, where the space’s purpose was more pragmatically aligned with minimal human intervention involved. The newly scripted program reconfigures the volume, assigning functions to various levels while reinforcing a contiguous design thread. The structure houses vehicular access and a staff area at the street level. The central stairwell leads to the first level, housing the live experience centre and product display zones. The uppermost level comprises the CEO’s cabin and a meeting space.

The central stairwell space

Structural and material design

Sans pretence, the structure is adorned with a gamut of tactile textures that preserve its gritty demeanour. Exposed brickwork, compressed blocks made from recycled debris, natural wall plaster, and micro-concrete are leitmotifs.

The concrete-swathed coffee bar

Roof system

The built form bears porous quality, its roof punctured with skylights inviting strobes of daylight in and the central stairwell a Lego-esque construction of perforated MS members that were formerly storage uprights.

The vertical space of the transparent staircase

Upstairs, the customer experience zone ups the ante — the space’s walls transform from starkly linear to sinuous, forming a concrete, live shower cubicle that bleeds terracotta on the inside. These walls wind and manifest as a discussion nook and a concrete-swathed coffee bar that enjoys veiled slivers of the streetscape. The cabin and meeting pods on the uppermost level echo rooted sensibilities, with views of soaring skyscrapers forming a dichotomous backdrop to the pulse of Lakda Bazaar below.
