On the northern edge of Drenthe, in the enchanting marshland of De Onlanden, stands Black Barns: a contemporary interpretation of the barn house, designed by Loer Architecten. Here, nature and technology come together through an integrated design of landscape and architecture. The project is a collaboration between Woman by Earn, Erna Mostert, Beauvast, and Loer Architecten, a shared pursuit of beauty, sustainability, and simplicity.

Biobased building as second nature

Black Barns is more than a home; it is a biobased villa that blends seamlessly into its surroundings. Built using timber frame construction and clad in deep black wooden façades, the house reflects the atmosphere of a traditional Drenthe farmstead. The thatched roof embraces the natural environment, while integrated solar panels in the outbuilding make the home energy neutral. The ensemble of three buildings, a main residence and two outbuildings, is carefully oriented toward the sun. Large windows allow the landscape to flow into the interior, where warmth, light, and sightlines converge.

Landscape as foundation

The design is part of the master plan for the former Schelfhorst campsite, centered on the theme of living in nature. The master plan by Cor and Sibylle Kalfsbeek focuses on ecological integration, biobased materials, and a contemporary architectural vision. The garden is gradually being returned to nature. In designing the barn house, sightlines and framed views of the landscape were key. Solid façades provide privacy and comfort, while the alternation between openness and enclosure offers both shelter and a connection to the surrounding landscape. Alongside the chosen materials, this approach makes nature not only tangible but also visible from new perspectives.

Collaboration and construction team

The design was realized through close collaboration between client Erna Mostert and Loer Architecten. Erna Mostert, founder of the sustainable fashion brand Woman by Earn, sought a minimalist design with the charm of a farmhouse. Through sketches, models, and mood boards, the team worked for three years on creating a dream barn house with a studio. After completion of the interior, the Drenthe villa now serves not only as a home but also as a setting for photoshoots and working sessions for Woman by Earn.

Barn house of the future

With precise detailing, natural materials, an inspiring client, and a dedicated construction team, the aim was to achieve an uncompromising result. The team worked passionately to realize an energy-neutral home that is not only functional but also radiates character, tranquility, and beauty. Black Barns embodies the belief that sustainability can inspire the imagination.
