The project is situated within a dilapidated 72-year-old former industrial complex. Once the Zhengzhou Oil and Chemical Plant, a key Soviet-aided project under the First Five-Year Plan of the People’s Republic of China, it ceased production only in 2006 and has since been gradually repurposed for commercial use.

For this project, HUIZONG was given the opportunity to renovate a heritage-listed old Soviet-style red-brick building on the site. Its significance extends far beyond architectural design; it is, first and foremost, a dialogue between history and time. Seventy-two years of elapsed time have left their indelible marks across every brick wall, their fragmented, quiet traces preserved within the very fabric of the building. Many of the wood and brick details have long since faded, while the windows remain relatively intact. Several Chinese parasol trees and an old pomegranate tree, which have stood on the site for decades, require only minimal pruning and careful preservation. The decommissioned cast-concrete utility pole was also earmarked for preservation: to this end, an 11-meter-tall vertical glass block enclosure was constructed to house it, allowing rainwater to enter, with wild grasses, moss, and vines planted within. Here, time, vegetation, and architecture intertwine wildly and grow freely, merging with the brand identity of the new project to form a one-of-a-kind “historical art installation”. Soaring skyward, it is visible to people from a great distance. Coincidentally, the new project is named Those Years — as if it was always meant to take root and grow in this very place.

The entire single-story, over 100-square-meter old red-brick building has been fully preserved. Even the traces of time and vintage objects within the building have been left in their original positions, meticulously protected and appropriately restored during construction in a process akin to delicate surgery. To the west of the building, where an additional 200+ square meters of buildable space was available, HUIZONG opted to use fair-faced concrete to create a new 100-square-meter building volume with 500mm-thick walls, while reserving a 130-square-meter outdoor courtyard. In this way, the three spaces — the original building, the new extension, and the courtyard — interlock organically with one another. At the junction of the old and new structures, a gap of over 20 centimeters was left, infilled with glass and metal to allow light and shadow to filter through, creating a natural separation and connection between the two. The red brick and fair-faced concrete present two distinctly different temperaments, as if an elder is sharing stories with a young soul. When sunlight filters through the dappled shade of the trees, the 72 years of bygone days unfold like a black-and-white film reel, the long-faded voices, faces, and the whisper of the wind drifting gently through the air.

Though it houses a dining space, this place is more akin to a Museum of Time. Visitors come not just for a sumptuous feast, but to immerse themselves in spiritual nourishment for the soul, a journey across 72 years of human history within these walls.
